Photographer: Solve Sundsbo

He is known as a fashion photographer but these series of photos stood out to me for their bold use of color and movement with such a simple subject matter. It showcases the object in a sterile environment so you can really focus on the color combination and composition.

His series in this old hotel resonated with me because it is beautiful natural lighting captured in a old, abandoned hotel. Some of the images are haunting with deep black shadows and evidence of the wear and tear over time. While others are invigorated by the color combination of the walls and furniture. They make something ugly or old, beautiful.

I like that her work is stylized and composed yet captures a moment. The subject matter is much about women and fashion which also interest me. The lighting can be dramatic or just natural lighting of the location which also lends itself to the idea of things not being staged but happening in real life.

I love her images from South Africa in the 1940s. Her images give a warm, human quality to the subjects. The lighting is dramatic, with the shadows taking on a life of their own. I like the commentary she evokes with her subject matter, as she shows the humanity and majesty of people that were seen as part of an empire.
